Hay, according to Wikipedia, is the cut and dried grass, alfalfa, legumes or other herbaceous plants in large round bales. It is often used as animal fodder, especially for grazing cattle, horses, goats, sheep, etc.
In fact, hay can be made into pellets by feed pellet machine. It can make hay into unique shape pellets with mixture of other ingredients to make animals nutritionally balanced.
But now the significant use of hay is to produce fuel pellets with hay pellet machine.
There are 2 types of hay pellet machines: small hay pellet mill and large hay pellet mill.

Why do we use hay pellet mill machine to make fuel pellets?
Hay is a kind of common seen biomass in our daily life, and not all people who have hay also raise cattle. As a result, they do not need to make feed pellets. However, most families need fuel for heating their homes in winter or for cooking. In this case, hay pellets play an important role in reducing fuel cost!Hay pellets fuel facts:
- The raw material is cheap. Hay, as just mentioned above, can be found almost everywhere, so it even does not need any cost! You only need to pay for the hay pellet machine and auxiliary equipments like hammer mill or the like.
- Hay pellets are green. Their greenhouse gas emission is just 10% of coal, which can meet national greenhouse gas emission limit. So hay pellets are environmental friendly fuel sources.
- Heat value: 8,000BTU. It is the same as hardwood, as almost the same as coal or oil. This means hay pellets can burn efficiently.
- Hay pellets can also be used as mulch and soil conditioner be sold in garden stores. The pellets are weed-free and expand to four times their original size when wet.
How to make hay pellets at home?
- Cut the hay into powder. Sometimes the hay is in bales, but sometimes it is not. For hay which is not in bales, the hammer mill can be used to crush it into small pieces.
- Dry the hay powder. The hay, especially fresh hay, always contains too much moisture, which is not suitable for pelletizing directly. Under such condition, it shall be dried with dryer or spread on the floor to be dried by wind (for small scale production). Raw material with too much water will cause blockage to the pellet machine and decrease productivity.
- Pelletize. The hay powder is fed into the hay pellet machine, and pellets go out from the machine. Experience has told us that hay pellets without any additive will have high ash content when burning in common pellet stove. As a result, when making hay pellets, you’d better put some additive inside it. It is said that some pellet stove manufacturers are developing stoves specially for burning hay pellets.
- Cool the hay pellets. The pellets are very hot when they are made from pellet machine. As a result, they must be cooled for further package or storage.
